Facet Air Conditioner
The Facet is an air conditioner designed for households in the developing world. The system is powered by a single 5-volt fan, which sucks air in through vents at the Facet’s base. The air moves upwards, flowing around a series of reusable ice packs, and exits via the vent at the top of the device. A removable catchment tray in the base of the air conditioner collects water resulting from condensation. This system circumvents the two major issues with air conditioning: high cost and low efficiency. A unit can be built for less than $20, and the cooling action comes from the ice packs, meaning that there is no additional energy draw after the packs have been frozen.
